Javanese Folk Art

Javanese folk art grows in rural culture of Java, and has become a tradition although it is marginalized by modernity now. Javanese folk art includes a variety of themes, styles, motifs, patterns and functions. It usually made by wood, bamboo, metal, leather, clay, textile, glass, and natural or synthetic pigment as a medium. It represents local culture and folklore such as legend, myth, fairy tale, philosophy, Islamic traditions, and also Mahabharata and Ramayana epic.

Javanese Reverse Glass Painting (Calligraphy)

The figure is Petruk. It is not Javanese calligraphy actually, but is Arabic calligraphy influence in Cirebonese culture.

The figure is Semar. Semar is one of Punakawan in Pandawas side.
"Boya sira arsa mardi kamardikan aywa samar sumingkiring dur kamurkan", the philoshopy teach us that human is always have to keep the goodness alive and against the evil.

This is rajah. Islamic tradition also gives influences to Javanese folk art.
